Dr. Jim Hu, the Ronald P. Lynch professor of urologic oncology and director of the LeFrak Center for Robotic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, was awarded a grant from the Prevent Cancer Foundation for a project entitled “Using Technology to Improve Prostate Cancer Screening Information Quality.” The study aims to support and innovate initiatives aimed at reducing misinformation, improving patient decision making, and addressing disparities in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment.
“This award is foundational to empowering patients and their families to obtain accurate, clear, and trustworthy information about prostate cancer screening,” said Dr.Hu. “With prostate cancer incidencerising and disparities persisting, particularly among Black men, it is critical that we eliminate misinformation and ensure that online resources support informed decision-making. Our work will not only enhance public understanding but also contribute to national efforts, including the Cancer Moonshot Initiative, to reduce cancer mortality through early detection and prevention.”
The research team includes internationally renowned experts across urology, epidemiology, digital health and behavioral science from neighboring institutions including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and NYU Langone Health. The team also includes Joshua Winograd, a medical student at Weill Cornell Medicine with a background in engineering and medical informatics, and expertise in computational analysis and digital health innovation. Winograd designed a novel tool that assesses the reliability and readability of online content.
